A Better Chance of Westport is a non-profit
organization. It is affiliated with the national ABC
organization, which was founded in 1963 and whose
mission is to provide academically talented minority
youth with the opportunity for a top caliber high
school education in a private or public high school.
ABC of Westport is affiliated with the Westport public
high school, Staples High School. After
two years of planning, fundraising, and extensive
community participation, in the fall of 2002 we opened
our newly renovated ABC house to the first four young
men, who attend Staples High School. They live in the
house under the care of the resident directors, with
the guidance of the ABC board of directors, and with
special attention from their host families.
Over the next few years, more scholars will be added,
until there are eight young men living in the ABC
House striving to meet their highest potential through
being part of the Westport community.
In addition to the resident directors, ABC employs a
cook and a tutor. The organization is managed by a
volunteer Board of Directors and is fortunate to have
a large number of dedicated community volunteers
involved in all aspects of the organization.
