The recruitment, hiring and retention of highly-qualified administrators and teachers of color is the major focus of the Affirmative Action Recruitment Consortium (AARC), a group of twenty-five school districts in Eastern Massachusetts, who seek to provide a working environment that supports its commitment to diversity in public schools. As an integral component of its strategic plan developed several years ago, the Consortium members recognized that institutions of higher education play a significant role in the creation of a diverse educational workforce. Colleges and universities provide the career path to students and graduates of color who will later seek employment within the educational sector. As a result of this connection, members of AARC know that it is necessary to nurture a relationship with the presidents, deans and career service representatives of New England colleges and universities.
