THE PARK SCHOOL OF BALTIMORE
Lower School Principal
July 2018

The Park School of Baltimore seeks candidates for the Lower School Principal position
who possess strong academic credentials, demonstrated distinction in teaching and administration, and passionate commitment to the education of young children. An orientation compatible with Park’s commitment to progressive educational practices is essential.

The School: The Park School is a non-sectarian, independent, co-educational day school of 841 students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The Head of School is Daniel J. Paradis, appointed in July 2008. Founded in 1912 as one of the early progressive schools, The Park School continues to practice a distinctive educational philosophy and is an educational leader in Baltimore and the nation. The core values today, as in 1912, are a belief in children’s capacity to enjoy learning, to develop self-discipline, and to grow academically and emotionally when inspired by highly qualified, caring teachers, and a commitment to inclusivity and equity as fundamental human values.

The Position: The Lower School Principal has overall responsibility for curriculum and guidance, faculty support and supervision, student and parent programs for the division, consisting of seven grade levels (pre-kindergarten through fifth grade), including 280 students and 35 faculty members. The Lower School Principal is afforded a high degree of autonomy while functioning as a member of the senior administrative team with the Head and Associate Head of School, and the Middle and Upper School Principals. The Lower School Principal is supported by a team that includes a Lower School Assistant Principal, Lower School Counselor, Learning Resource Teacher, and two administrative assistants.

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include an advanced degree (early childhood or elementary education highly preferred) and 5-7 years of teaching experience. Administrative experience in a school setting is also highly preferred.

Beyond these basic qualifications, the following will be given special consideration in evaluation of applicants for the position:

Educational Philosophy:
• demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to principles of progressive education as reflected in curricular and guidance programs for lower school children
• ability to develop initiatives implied by these principles, to promote their understanding by faculty and students, and to interpret them to parents
• knowledge of a wide range of curricular approaches, including experiential learning, investigation and inquiry, and integration of subject areas
• knowledge of child development, including an understanding of social, emotional, and ethical dimensions of children’s growth across a full spectrum of pre-primary, primary, and elementary ages.

Leadership:
• a leadership style that derives its authority from a passionate and energetic commitment to the school’s purposes and an ability to tap this energy in others
• ability to provide latitude and scope for individual talents while coordinating individual strengths and encouraging collective purposes
• exceptional oral and written communication skills
• ability to sustain and participate in an intellectually lively, creative environment
• ability to handle conflicts and to make difficult decisions when necessary
• personal qualities of integrity, empathy, and humor.

Diverse and Inclusive Vision:
• clearly articulated approach to building and sustaining an inclusive community of faculty and families, and to further developing a curriculum that reflects diverse cultures and perspectives
• enthusiastic willingness to collaborate with other administrators on school-wide efforts, as well as primary responsibility for divisional initiatives involving faculty, students, and parents
• demonstrated commitment to cultural competency work.

Salary and Benefits: Park salaries and benefits are highly competitive with those in other leading independent schools. For new appointments, salaries reflect experience and training equated to Park’s scales.
Tuition Remission: Under current policy, full-time employees who have been employed at Park full-time for two years are eligible to receive full tuition remission for their children who attend Park. All applicants, including employee children, must meet Park’s standards for admission. (During the first two years of employment, employees may apply for aid through the need-based tuition assistance program.)
