Job Description/Responsibilities:
Moses Brown School is a co-educational independent day school for nursery through twelfth grade. A Friends school, MB exists to inspire students to reach their fullest intellectual and spiritual potential. We engage students in a rich academic curriculum, a broad offering of arts and athletics, and a daily life strongly rooted in the Quaker values of community, equality, and service. We affirm the Quaker belief that there is an inner light in each person which influences our decision making and leads us to the truths we seek. We consider virtues of simplicity, integrity, group wisdom, and respect for differences paramount to helping students of all faiths and backgrounds discover their missions in the world.

In its hiring practices, Moses Brown deliberately seeks to maximize the diversity of the school (in terms of class, gender, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, abilities/disabilities, and language).

Responsibilities: The Director of Friends Education is a full-time, exempt staff position reporting to the Head of School. A Quaker, the Director is responsible for modeling, supporting, and strengthening the practice of Friends education at Moses Brown. The Director works to educate the MB community about Quaker faith and practice, and the many ways that these can and should manifest themselves in support of the school’s mission. The Director works with faculty to identify new approaches and avenues through which the core elements of Quakerism can inform, shape and guide the operations and programs of the school. The Director is required to teach half-time in either the middle or upper schools— most recently, the Director has taught in the humanities department. The Director also plays a lead role in caring for the spiritual needs of the community.

Specific responsibilities include:

1. To educate members of the MB community about Quakerism and Friends education. This includes leading annual orientation for new families, employees, and Trustees as well as a day-long retreat for new employees.
2. To serve as a resource for teachers and administrators, helping them to understand and apply elements of Quaker faith and practice in their classrooms and elsewhere in the school.
3. To suggest and provide professional development opportunities for employees.
4. To assist in strengthening the relationship between Moses Brown and the broader Quaker community.
5. To support the school’s efforts to articulate the unique, Quaker aspects of the school to external audiences.
6. To serve on various committees and collaborate with other administrators to ensure, communicate about, and strengthen our identity as a Friends School. This includes serving as the school liaison to the Board’s Nurturing Friends Education Committee, and attending Quaker Life committees in various divisions.
7. To support school-wide initiatives strongly rooted in Quaker practice (e.g., service, diversity, and sustainability), as well as programs including aspects of Friends education (Quaker Youth Leadership conference, etc.).

Qualifications: Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited institution. Two to five years of teaching experience is preferred, although not a requirement for application. Master’s degree or beyond is desirable.
