The Bush School is in search of an individual to join our Upper School History Department to teach History. We are seeking a candidate who will support the school’s mission of diversity and inclusion and who has a background that displays and proves an understanding of cultural fluency.

The successful candidate will teach three sections of history with a focus on ninth grade history and will serve as an advisor to approximately eight to ten Upper School students. The ninth grade history course is rooted in Western Civilization and covers a wide range of topics and time periods allowing students to examine the modern world while building skills in historical thinking, close reading, analytical writing, and interpretation of historical materials. Through a high level of collaboration, the ninth grade teaching team delivers a strong foundation in historical research, critical analysis, and comparative thought.

While other duties may be assigned, the successful candidate will be able to manage the key responsibilities and tasks listed below:

• Be familiar with diverse learning styles
• Implement an interdisciplinary, multicultural, and experiential curriculum
• Participate in after-school school events such as Open House and Curriculum Night
• Be flexible, energetic, and committed to working actively with students
• Be able to teach three history sections in a semester system
• Enrich or modify lessons, curriculum, materials and resources as needed to meet differentiated student needs and varying levels of progress inside and outside of the classroom
• Collaborate with school counselors and learning specialists to establish and maintain social-emotional learning and wellness for all students
• Collaborate with other members of the history faculty to create common experiences centered on student inquiry
• Communicate openly, timely and supportively with students, staff, parents and other stakeholders regarding student achievement and progress
• Utilize technology to support student success (e.g. Google Docs)
 
 
Minimum Degree: BA
Certification Required: No
Minimum Experience: 3-5 Years

 
Qualifications:
Successful candidates will have:

• A bachelor’s degree in History is required and a graduate degree in History is preferred
• Capacity and desire to engage in experiential activities and programs with students
• Experience that will enable success in managing the key responsibilities and tasks
• Appreciation for a growth-mindset approach to all students and an ability to understand and respond to the developmental needs of upper school students
• Ability to collaborate with colleagues to create curriculum and programming at grade, department, division, and school-wide levels
• Ability to manage deadlines and due dates accurately and efficiently
• Effective communication skills, e.g. verbal, written
• Ability to use technology: including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite
