Job Description/Responsibilities:
Learning Specialist Agreement Start Date: August 1, 2020 The primary responsibility of the Bennett Day School Learning Specialist is to support the academic and developmental needs of the Bennett Day School community. The Learning Specialist will work in close partnership with students, faculty, and families to provide support and direction connected to academic and developmental growth of students in grades Senior Kindergarten through Seventh Grade. This includes supporting established curriculum, project-based learning, and individual student growth, as it relates to current educational best practices, personalized learning and neuroscience research. The Learning Specialist is a resource for teachers and parents to consult on academic and developmental needs. Engaging parents through consultation about learning practices, as well as collaborating with teams of teachers about children, are critical elements of this position. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of children’s academic and developmental expectations at each grade and age level. Experience with case management, including student IEPs and 504 plans, in addition to management of related resources, personnel, and law is preferred. Job Specifications Facilitate consistent Tier 2 and 3 instruction, monitoring student progress, and collaborating with classroom teachers and families Provide support for universal screening and standardized testing including organization, communication and administration of accommodations Develop various proactive academic plans to support classroom instruction for individual student needs, which may include the creation and implementation of varied types of documentation and assessment Collaborate with teachers to support classroom instruction, curriculum, and project based learning To serve as first resource for teachers looking for additional suggestions, strategies and/or methods related to the academic and developmental needs of individual students, as well as groups of students To assist in support of students and families transitioning to/from Bennett Day School To keep the Directors and Principal fully informed on student issues and other relevant matters pertaining to student and school life Provide training/teaching for students, teachers and parents for the school’s ongoing development of best practices, pedagogical approaches, and differentiated instruction Build an In-depth knowledge of laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards as related to the unique needs of our student population, teaching faculty, and larger school community To serve as the liaison and coordinate with teachers, administrators, and outside support systems (physicians, mental health professionals, hospitals, courts, child protective services, etc.) for the purpose of providing/receiving requested information, making recommendations, and supporting our students Professional Development: Monday afternoon faculty meetings and Wednesday afternoon, ongoing professional development in and out of school, beginning and end of year PD Participation in family/community evening/weekend events: Curriculum Night, Family Association Meeting and 2 of the following required; Parent Panel, Open House, New Family Play Date or other additional Admissions/Marketing outreach events. Participation in self-evaluation and reflection process; individual and team meetings Supervision responsibilities may include: recess, lunch, snack, arrival or dismissal as assigned Hours: 7:30a-4:00p T/TH/F; 7:30a-5:00p M/W (Faculty meetings and Professional Development) Responsibilities are not all-inclusive and will include other duties as assigned
Minimum Degree: BA
Certification Required: Yes
Minimum Experience: 1-3 Years

Job Qualifications Passion for the mission and the vision of Bennett Day School; including understanding of the tenets of progressive education Experience in individual student case management Working Knowledge of Individuals with Disabilities Act, including Individual Education Plans, 504 plans, etc. Strong knowledge of assistive technologies, learning resources, and a professional network of learning specialists Experience in multisensory approaches to reading such as Orton-Gillingham or SLANT Thoughtful judgment, effective interpersonal skills, excellent skills in oral and written communications Ability to effectively present information to all constituencies of the school Flexibility in adapting to change that happens in an entrepreneurial minded school Three years minimum of relevant experience; Master’s degree related to Special Education preferred
