Job Description/Responsibilities:

Deerfield Academy, a private coeducational boarding school founded in 1797 and annually serving approximately 650 students grades 9-12, seeks a Teacher of Chinese starting in the 2023-24 academic year. The primary classroom responsibility will be teaching four sections of beginning to advanced Chinese language and culture courses. The primary out-of-classroom responsibilities will include leading co-curricular activities (varsity or sub-varsity teams, community service activities, publications, etc.), dormitory residence or supervision, advising, committee work, and family-style dining hall meals with students. Faculty also have opportunities to design and lead domestic and international travel programs.

Additionally, candidates for this position will possess the following specific attributes/qualifications:


       Experience teaching proficiency-oriented Chinese classes for beginning, intermediate, and advanced level students in some setting

       Native or near-native proficiency in Chinese

       Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

       Interest in and demonstrated skill working with adolescents

       A master’s degree (preferred)

       Willingness to contribute to the life of the school community beyond the classroom

       Demonstrated multicultural competency and commitment to inclusivity

       The ability to work with colleagues as a part of a team

       A sense of humor
