Moving beyond healing to create affirming, joyful, and culturally centered learning environments for Black students.
This 1-day conference is designed to foster dialogue, share innovative solutions, and provide practical tools for ALL educators (teachers, administrators, DEIB practitioners, counselors, learning specialists, coaches and others) who seek knowledge and best practices for supporting Black students to thrive in independent schools.
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Daryl Howard, Maryland State Department of Education Task Force on Equity and Excellence for Black Boys. Dr. Howard is an equity instructional specialist whose work and research interests include race and cultural proficiency, social emotional learning, and the triumphs and challenges of African American male students. As a member of Maryland’s State Department of Education’s Task Force on Equity and Excellence for Black Boys, he researches and recommends policy and practice to disrupt harmful narratives, decrease disproportionality and elevate achievement.
Featured Speakers: Cole Brown, author, Greyboy: Finding Blackness in a White World and Kendra James, author, Admissions: A Memoir of Surviving Boarding School
Cole Brown is a Philly kid—raised in Philadelphia’s predominantly white private schools and neighborhoods—political commentator, writer, and author of the book, Greyboy: Finding Blackness in a White World. The book received praise from Diddy, Queen Latifah, The New York Times, Forbes, and others for its honest examination of an underexplored side of the Black experience: that of Black kids maturing in predominantly white environments. Greyboy also received an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Literary Work — Debut Author.
Kendra James began her career as an admissions professional, specializing in diversity recruitment for independent schools. Eventually, she moved on to write Admissions: A Memoir of Surviving Boarding School, while working as a founding editor at Shondaland.com, and becoming the first Black woman to become the managing editor of StarTrek.com. She was the first Black American "legacy" at the Taft School, a CT boarding school considered to be among the top prep schools in New England for its rigorous academics and selective admissions process (“legacy” here meaning the child, grandchild or great-grandchild of a graduate).
In addition to these dynamic speakers, the conference will also offer a series of workshops for you to choose from where you will: hear from some local experts and their research in the field; spend time reflecting on your own individual experiences; and, learn from one another!
