Job Description:
The Associate Head of Upper School for Academics at Francis Parker School is charged with motivating and leading the Upper School faculty in developing an educational program that is focused on graduating students who embody those qualities essential for academic success and personal fulfillment—intellectual curiosity, creative thinking, a passion for learning, a sense of ethical responsibility, self-reliance, community engagement, and global competence while maintaining positive, effective communications with parents and other key constituents in the community. All aspects of the role will be held to the standards of best practices for independent schools. The Associate Head of Upper School for Academics is charged with keeping abreast of research and developments in education and bringing relevant advances to the Upper School. The Associate Head of Upper School for Academics builds and empowers faculty to enact research-based curricular updates and transformations.

The Associate Head of Upper School for Academics reports to the Head of Upper School and serves as an active member of the Upper School Leadership Team (USLT); partnering with other administrators and faculty to ensure program alignment with Parker’s mission. The position oversees the Upper School’s academic program, faculty recruitment, retention, and professional development, and faculty evaluation in partnership with the Middle School and in alignment with Parker’s mission. Along with the Head of the Middle School, the Associate Head of Upper School for Academics will Co-Chair the Grades 6-12 Department Chairs and will be responsible for their supervision, ongoing professional development and evaluation with support from the Head of Upper School.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
● Provide leadership to motivate and facilitate faculty to achieve JK-12 and 6-12 curricular goals in the Upper School.
● Oversee the Upper School’s academic program: curriculum; teaching and assessment standards and methods; co-curricular activities; academic policies; academic records; substitution teaching; class schedule; academic advising system with Grade Level Deans; recruitment and retention of exceptional faculty; faculty responsibilities; and communication with parents regarding academics.
● Oversee the academic use of technology including curricular integration, learning management system, and student information system.
● Observe, supervise, and evaluate faculty to assure shared outcomes, scope and sequence, objectives, and continuity of skills and values while at the same time encouraging and supporting faculty members to define and exercise their unique passions in teaching and learning.
● Be a strong active presence in all classrooms as an observer, a supporter, a teacher, a facilitator, and a colleague.
● Ensure compliance of academic program and faculty to standards of governmental and accrediting agencies and oversee the self-study process for reaccreditation.
● Coordinate academic events and ceremonies.
● Communicate with the parent community through correspondence as well as formal and informal parent programs. Work with Parents Association on projects and programs related to the academic program.
● Oversee budgets: academic departments, professional development, and academic teams.
● Teach one class in content area if appropriate.
● Perform other duties as necessary or assigned by the Head of Upper School in support of the Upper School and its leadership.
Minimum Degree: BA
Certification Required: No
Minimum Experience: 5-7 Years

• Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree or higher preferred
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in the classroom, including a strong understanding of life and work in an independent school community, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Outstanding academic credentials, impeccable teaching skills, experience in academic leadership, and insatiable intellectual curiosity
• Proven knowledge of and experience with curriculum design models
• Demonstrated leadership and team-building skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities; desire and ability to serve in a public role in the community
• Expertise with technology as a teaching resource
• Strong computer skills, including experience using Learning Management Systems (LMS)
• Initiative and creativity to develop a challenging, innovative, and exciting curriculum
• Exceptional intellectual and emotional intelligence
• Impressive diplomatic and negotiating skills
• Strategic and long-range institutional vision
