Sandy Spring Friends School seeks a dynamic, insightful educational leader to lead a creative, caring, and forward-looking Lower School Division in a school that manifests a strong sense of community and purpose.

The Lower School Head is the academic and administrative leader of SSFS’s Lower School for 3-Year-olds through fifth grade. As such, they bear responsibility for all aspects of the curricular and extra-curricular program, faculty supervision, and staff professional growth. Additionally, the Lower School Head is charged with fostering a school environment that is consistent with Quaker values and principles. The Lower School Head is a senior school administrator who reports directly to the Head of School, serves as a member of the school-wide Administrative Council, and is invited to attend Board of Trustee meetings.

The Lower School Head represents the needs and concerns of Lower School faculty, staff, students, and parents to the Head of School, and serves as a liaison to all other constituencies of the School. An emphasis on primary and elementary curriculum renewal/development and healthy enrollment in the Lower School, along with continued prioritization of campus-wide diversity, requires close collaboration with the Middle and Upper School Heads as well as the Admissions Office. Supervisory responsibilities include the Lower School Faculty, an Administrative Assistant, two Learning Specialists, a Counselor/Assistant Head, and Physical Education Faculty.

Academic and Program Responsibilities:

Oversee the Lower School program and ensure that it fulfills the Sandy Spring Friends School statements of Mission and Philosophy. (http://www.ssfs.org/about/mission-philosophy)
Recruit, hire, and oversee orientation of new faculty in coordination with the Head of School, Assistant Head of School, and Director of Human Resources
Supervise and evaluate all Lower School teachers and staff members
Oversee the Lower School curriculum and identify and lead curricular development and renewal
Work closely with Lower School parents and the Parents Association
Work closely with the Admissions Office to support enrollment and retention
Serve as the Lower School representative for all public relations needs
Administrative Responsibilities:

Plan and administer the Lower School budget
Review and revise annually the Lower School Faculty Guidebook, Lower School sections of the Community Handbook, and the Lower School Program Guide
Oversee the creation of the weekly Lower School Parent Bulletin as part of the all-school electronic newsletter
Oversee the creation, contents, and distribution of all Lower School mailings, including: grade mailings, comment mailings, letters to parents, etc.
In consultation with the Lower School Clerk, plan the Lower School Division Meeting agenda
Oversee the planning and execution of the Lower School division calendars and schedules
Serve on a variety of school committees including Admissions, Financial Aid, and Diversity
Collaborate with the Middle School on student and parent transitions to the next division
Promote the continued integration of technology and associated training into the academic and administrative programs of the Lower School
Provide oversight for major discipline issues
Oversee a mentoring program for all new Lower School personnel
Maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all students in the Lower School
Maintain a supportive work environment for all Lower School personnel
Actively support the inclusion of Quaker values and practices within the Lower School program
Maintain the balance between academics, athletics, arts, and service within the Lower School program in developmentally appropriate ways
Assure compliance with Maryland state requirements for early childhood education programs & licensure and accreditation standards of the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS)

Physical Requirements: The ability to navigate stairs as part of daily routines; mobility around a large campus with uneven pavement; bending and squatting as required to participate in activities; lifting/carrying boxes up to 25 pounds; and the ability to maneuver as necessary within a regular office/classroom setting.

Qualifications Include: Bachelor’s degree required (graduate degree and demonstrated classroom teaching experience strongly preferred); excellent written and interpersonal communication skills; proven academic and team leadership skills; demonstrated expertise in primary and elementary level curriculum development in a college preparatory environment; and proficiency in current technology as it applies to administrative tasks in curricula. The ideal candidate will have experience with Responsive Classroom program and a commitment to education and schools as agents for societal progress.
