Job Description/Responsibilities:
Pomfret School is seeking to hire a Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This senior administrative position will serve on the senior leadership team and will report directly to the head of school. This individual will be tasked with overseeing the development and implementation of programs and policies aimed at making Pomfret a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive school.

Diversity Statement:
At Pomfret, we believe diversity is who we are. Diversity refers to those differences in identity that impact our social experiences, including status and access to resources. Most obviously it is determined by race, gender, ethnicity, age, and appearance. On a more subtle level it includes socio-economic status, sexual orientation, religion, and ability.

We are guided by research that indicates academic excellence and a diverse learning environment are synergistically linked and that students in diverse classroom settings show growth in intellectual development, motivation, academic performance, and the ability to get along with others.

Position Statement:
The Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) will provide strategic and visionary leadership for Pomfret School’s efforts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. While supporting the School’s mission and core values of integrity, growth, and community, the Dean will develop and lead initiatives that enhance Pomfret’s desire to be a welcoming place where everyone feels at home. The Dean will work closely with students, faculty, staff, trustees, and administrators to refine the Diversity Strategic Plan and ensure that the School remains committed to achieving the goals outlined in that plan. The Dean is a member of the senior administrative team and will report to the Head of School.

• In partnership with the Head of School and members of the senior leadership team, ensure that institutional decisions align with the core philosophies, principles, and values implicit in our diversity, equity, and inclusion work.
• In partnership with the Head of School and members of the senior leadership team, develop and implement policies and practices that promote an inclusive community for students, parents, employees, and alumni.
• In partnership with the Director of the Grauer Institute, the Dean of Academics, and members of the faculty, make certain that the School’s curriculum and instruction are broadly inclusive and culturally responsive, keeping with the Vision of the Pomfret Graduate.
• In partnership with the Dean of Students, the student life team, and the leaders of the School’s student life curriculum called QUEST (Question, Understand, Engage, Share, and Transition), develop and implement programs that make it easy for all students — irrespective of race, identity, cultural affiliation, or background — to fully participate in, and benefit from, the Pomfret Experience.
• In partnership with the Director of Spiritual and Ethical Education, work to address the needs of students of all faiths.
• In partnership with the Head’s Group, the Human Resources Office, and the Diversity Hiring Task Force, work to attract and retain employees who represent the diversity of the world we live in.
• In partnership with the Dean of Students office, support international students.
• Chair the Diversity Council.
• Craft internal professional development opportunities related to diversity, equity, and inclusion for employees and trustees.
• Invite students, faculty, and staff to participate in training that enhances their understanding of and commitment to DEI initiatives.
• Teach DEI programming to students in QUEST and through participation in Project: Pomfret and classwork.
• Assist the admissions, communications, and advancement teams with their outreach and messaging efforts around issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Direct the Virginia S. Eaton Multicultural Resource Center.
• Serve as a resource on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, sharing best practices and relevant research with the community.
• Spearhead the creation of affinity groups and support networks for students and adults.
• Follow trends in the educational field related to DEI and attend appropriate professional development opportunities.
• Participate fully in school life by maintaining an active presence on campus and contributing to afternoon, evening, and weekend programming, as appropriate.
Minimum Degree: BA
Certification Required: No
Minimum Experience: 3-5 Years

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
• Bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in an applicable field
• Experience driving organizational change in diversity, equity, and inclusion, with at least three years in a position of proven leadership
• Commitment to supporting and enhancing a school culture rooted in community, growth, and integrity
• Ability to communicate with students, parents, colleagues, and alumni, based on a highly developed sense of emotional intelligence, and a healthy respect for differing points of view
• Excellent public speaking, facilitation, and listening skills
• Demonstrated experience crafting and deploying a strategic plan
• Ability to work collaboratively with multiple teams to accomplish shared goals
• Strong ties to other leaders and organizations in the DEI community
• Detail-oriented with the ability to manage time-sensitive projects
• High ethical standards and an acute awareness of appropriate boundaries
• Sensitivity and respect for the needs of an adolescent population
• Commitment to the Pomfret School mission and its values
• A minimum of two years of teaching experience is preferred
