Job Description/Responsibilities:
Sidwell Friends Lower School, a PK-12 Quaker day school located in Bethesda seeks an Assistant Principal for its Lower School (PK-4) division. The Assistant Lower School Principal would work collaboratively with the Lower School Principal to support the faculty/staff, students and families in the lower school division. The Assistant Lower School Principal is responsible for creating the PK-4th grade schedule; overseeing substitute teachers; and acting as the Academic Dean for the Lower School. In collaboration with the Lower School Principal, the Assistant Principal would share oversight of the curriculum, support of the daily life and running of the division, and mentoring and supporting new faculty/staff and teaching teams. In addition, the Assistant Principal will work with the Lower School Principal to observe classes as part of the annual faculty evaluation process. Weekly meetings include the Student Support Team, Grade Levels and Specials Clerks Meeting, Grade Level Curriculum Meetings, and Lower School Meetings for Business. As Academic Dean, the Assistant Lower School Principal would be responsible for working across divisions (as part of the Academic Coordination Group) to oversee the continual development and refinement of curricular programs that are vertically aligned, innovative, and serve to deepen the mission of the School. Responsibilities include staying abreast of educational research and trends; leading or organizing ongoing professional development for faculty; regularly assessing programs in collaboration with faculty to identify areas of strength and challenge; ensuring coherence, vertical alignment and grade-to-grade coordination and understanding across the division; and identifying and coordinating opportunities for cross-curricular work. The Assistant Lower School Principal would also collaborate with the Lower School Principal and Director of Equity, Justice and Community to embed the Quaker testimonies and diversity, inclusion, and social justice work into the core curriculum and to analyze student learning to ensure equity in School programs and student experiences. A strong background in curriculum design and innovation is desired. The Assistant Lower School Principal would also work closely with the faculty to provide ongoing mentoring and coaching in the areas of collaboration, planning, and instruction, with a focus on new teachers and new teams. The Assistant Lower School Principal is expected to attend evening and weekend events, such as meetings with families, Lower School celebrations (Fall Fair, Heritage Festival, etc.), Back to School Nights, Admissions events, etc.
 
 
Minimum Degree: BA
Certification Required: No
Minimum Experience: 3-5 Years

 
Qualifications:
Applicants must possess an undergraduate or Master’s degree in Education or Educational Leadership (advanced degree is preferred) and the candidate should have previous experience in administration or leadership in an elementary school setting (3-5 years is preferred). The candidate should be child-centered, collaborative, positive, kind and possess a good sense of humor. This is a 12-month, full-time position.
