Character

Founded in 1763, The Governor's Academy is the oldest continuously operating boarding school in the United States, educating young men and women in grades 9 through 12. 

Location

Byfield, Massachusetts, 33 miles north of Boston, 5 miles from Newburyport, 4 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, next to the Great Atlantic Salt Marshes. 

Campus

48 buildings on 450 acres. Extensive facilities for athletics and visual and performing arts, as well as a state-of-the-art library, computer centers, labs, student center, and dining hall. Nine dorm buildings include mostly single rooms, as well as comfortable common areas. Campus buildings are connected by fiber optic technology.

Students

More than 406 students. Approximately one-third of students are day students; two-thirds are boarders. Our student body is made up of students from 18 states and 17 countries including Canada, United Kingdom, China, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Faculty

91 full-time faculty members. The student-faculty ratio is 5:1. 88% of faculty members live on campus. The average tenure of faculty members is 14 years.

Academic Highlights

Average class size is 11 students. Governor's offers honors, advanced and Advanced Placement classes, as well as independent study. Foreign languages include Chinese, French, Latin, and Spanish.

Athletics

More than 50 interscholastic teams from varsity to thirds. Governor's holds a strong record in the ISL, Independent School League, arguably one of the most competitive prep leagues in the nation.

Campus Life

25 extracurricular groups and activities. 

Sustainability

Recycling, composting, organic garden, solar panels on several campus buildings, and four star Green Restaurant Certified.

Tuition and Financial Aid 

Tuition for the 2024-2025 academic year is $76,550 for boarding students and $61,925

for day students. We understand that each family who considers Governor’s must find a balance between the value of education and the cost of tuition. For the 2024-2025 school year, we awarded over $6 million in financial aid; approximately 29% of the student body received financial assistance.
