Mater Dei School is an independent, Catholic school for boys in grades one through eight. Mater Dei, which was founded in 1960, has a completely lay faculty and is not associated with a parish or a religious order but operates with the blessing of the Archdiocese of Washington. The student body of 225 focuses on the four elements of the school's philosophy: "work hard, play hard, pray hard, but most of all, be a good guy." Accordingly, students are given a reasonably fast-paced yet basic curriculum and a healthy dose of sports to complement their spiritual and character formation. Faculty are hired to be role models as well as teachers, and Upper School faculty (grades five through eight) also coach.
Mater Dei is located in Bethesda, Maryland, about five miles outside of Washington, DC. Starting salary for beginning teachers is currently $27,000. Benefits include 80% health coverage (single or family); retirement plans; long-term disabilty and insurance coverage; graduate school fees in most cases. There are fourteen full-time faculty and a total staff of twenty-seven.
