Employer Description

The Co-op School is a progressive, independent school located in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, and serves students in preschool through grade 8. Those who make up our faculty and administration are the backbone of our school. Their diverse backgrounds, passions, and approach to working within our community contribute to making The Co-op School a truly compassionate, unique learning environment.

Our families and staff work together in a cooperative model that helps keep tuition lower than other independent schools and also results in a unique sense of ownership and belonging and provides a more harmonious and thriving community.

Diversity Mission Statement

The Co-op School seeks to create a fully inclusive community. We celebrate students, families, and teachers who represent the diversity of Brooklyn and beyond, as it relates to race, ethnicity, gender, family structure, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, learning style and physical ability. We encourage members to freely share their whole selves, and we intentionally honor and recognize our differences and commonalities. The Co-op School is committed to a responsive anti-bias curriculum that is supported by ongoing teacher development and is continually reevaluated. This work, with young children, is as much about precluding the formation of biases as it is about disproving their myths. Our critical explorations differ based upon a student’s maturity, evolve with their growing awareness, and conversations and activities are adapted accordingly. Ultimately, our social justice work extends beyond the classroom, leading to broader examinations of equity, and inspiring students to become change-makers.
