Since its founding in 1867, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
has been a leader in developing learning experiences that transform
students, and producing innovative research that impacts the world. The
Power of I is embodied by each member of the U of I family, which
includes nearly 50,000 students and more than 470,000 living alumni.
With its land-grant heritage as a foundation, the U of I has a long
history of public engagement and social impact. These responsibilities
continue to permeate our classrooms and drive our research and outreach
today.
Fostering a culture of innovation – one that inspires and propagates
creativity, discovery and ingenuity – is also at the core of our
identity. Our faculty have been awarded Nobel Prizes, Pulitzer Prizes,
and the Fields Medal in Mathematics. The success of our faculty is
matched by that of our alumni: 11 are Nobel Laureates and another 18
have won Pulitzer Prizes.
