Employer Description

Rooted School began in 2014. First, as a 15-student pilot in New Orleans. Inspired by the growth of living-wage jobs in the region, Jonathan Johnson  (CEO of Rooted School Foundation) experienced teaching in Central City, and grew up living paycheck-to-paycheck, Jonathan believed there was more that could be done to lift those on the lower rungs of the economic ladder up in their lifetime.

Six years, four states later, Rooted School is widely recognized as one of the most innovative public school models in the U.S.

Core to its educational model and belief is that youth are a vastly underutilized talent source in our communities. And, with the right training, high expectations, and a deep sense of possibility the U.S. can leverage teenagers’ talents to meet its increasingly changing workforce demands.

We believe schools can play a bigger role in changing this than they currently are.

Rooted School aims to lay the groundwork for closing this gap in our students’ lifetimes. One way we’re measuring this is by becoming the U.S.’s leading placer of teens into the tens of thousands of jobs opening in their communities over the next decade and beyond that provide a family-sustaining wage.

In August 2022, Rooted School Vancouver will launch as the first charter school to open in southwest Washington State’s history.

We know the journey won’t be easy.

Many will say we can’t do it.

We hope that you’ll join us anyway.

Diversity Mission Statement

228 years: That’s how long it would take for African Americans to accumulate the same amount of wealth whites have now if current policies remain in place. 84 years for Latino Americans. Maximizing the number of regular high school diplomas obtained by members of our First Nation youth will increase employment and therefore, wealth and opportunities. According to Jefferson Keel, former president of the National Congress of American Indians stated in 2013, “more highly-skilled and educated Native young people are coming back to serve in our communities as doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers, entrepreneurs.”

Our Values

Growth: We push ourselves to grow at all

times.

Preparation: We are prepared.

Hospitality: We put people first.

Excellence: We push the limits of what’s possible.

Community: We never forget where we come from.

Our Promise

We exist to see our students academically prepared and financially free.

Some students will arrive at financial freedom with a college next to their name, others without.

Our job is not to decide how they will get there but to provide them the options to get there.

We teach students how to learn in an ever-changing world, develop their skills in the most in-demand job sectors and create technology that is transformational.

Our Rooted School Vancouver school will offer opportunities for students across the digital sector.

Many students will graduate with highly sought-after jobs in technology—paying well above the local living wage.

Many students will go onto college with a sense of purpose and a relevant context for being there.

All will leave with a job offer in one hand and a college acceptance letter in the other.
