Yarmouth Schools are among New England’s highest-performing public school districts, serving 1,700 students in a suburb of Portland, Maine, 90 miles north of Boston, Massachusetts. Situated on the beautiful coast of Maine, Yarmouth Schools have established a reputation of excellence in academics, performing arts, student activities and athletics.
Yarmouth Schools are consistently recognized among the highest performing in Maine, with two National Blue Ribbon Schools since 2018. Our mission of “Empowering Students” stands at the forefront of our work each day, and our supportive, engaged community challenges us to nurture curiosity, skills development, and knowledge acquisition for each student on a daily basis.
Continually striving to improve, Yarmouth Schools are eager to add more innovative, dynamic and motivated educators to the district. We encourage inquiries from candidates who will contribute to the cultural and ethnic diversity of our professional staff.

It is the intent of the Yarmouth Schools administration that no student or staff member is discriminated against because of their race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ancestry or national origin, age, disability, genetic information, or socio-economic status.
Through our work focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Yarmouth Schools strive to ensure that all students are provided equitable opportunities to access the school’s curricular and extra-curricular offerings in a setting that is physically and emotionally safe and recognizes the individual needs of each student.
We desire to celebrate each person’s individuality and honor who they are without bias, and we recognize that achieving equity does not in any way involve discriminating against or shaming individuals based on their own personal characteristics. We believe that true equity is best achieved by lifting up and supporting those who have been discriminated against, rather than demeaning others.
Because of these beliefs, our work will be focused in the following ways:
* Ensuring that our schools are welcoming places for all students, staff, and families by improving our registration and orientation processes, increasing access for non-native English speakers and those who are new to our culture, and expanding the integration opportunities for students moving to Yarmouth from other communities in Maine, the United States, or elsewhere in the world.
* Ensuring that our classrooms and libraries offer learning experiences that recognize and celebrate diversity, including increasing the numbers and types of instructional materials that present characters who are representative of the larger world, and removing or revamping those offerings that may have unwittingly promoted stereotypes that made some students feel devalued.
* Developing hiring practices and protocols that invite a broader applicant pool, with the belief that hiring the best person from a more competitive pool will be of greater benefit to our students.
* Examining existing policies and practices to ensure they are not biased against individuals because of any personal characteristics identified above.
* Improving communication between and among students, staff, families and community members to ensure that all school citizens understand what it means to treat one another with dignity, respect, and empathy, and that any actions to the contrary will be cause for intervention.
We recognize the challenges of this work and are committed to providing a safe, inclusive learning environment for all students and staff, employing a variety of approaches that celebrate diversity and promote equity with positivity and optimism.
