Employer Description

Tandem Friends School of Charlottesville, VA is a unique school with a unique history, guided by the Quaker principles that define Friends Schools and has three school mottos: kindness and wisdom, creativity and integrity, and freedom with responsibility. Founded in 1970 as an alternative to the segregation academies that proliferated throughout the south at that time, Tandem was the first school in the area founded as both coeducational and racially integrated. Over time, Tandem found Quaker schools to be kindred spirits and joined the Friends Council of Education, becoming a Friends School in 1996.

With approximately 250 students and spanning only grades 5-12, the school aims to cultivate a school culture in which adolescents feel invested in their school community, feel seen and appreciated, and feel comfortable being their full selves at school. By encouraging the exploration of new activities and experiences and supporting students’ sense of community responsibility and belonging, the school strives to build a challenging and engaging academic experience that feels purposeful to its students. We are committed to making Tandem Friends a great place in which to grow up and have a voice and impact in shaping the experience of students in both the Upper and Middle Schools.

Diversity Mission Statement

At Tandem Friends School we foster an inclusive community that values and celebrates the experiences of people of different races, ethnicities, genders, gender identities, sexual orientations, family structures, economic positions, faith traditions, physical abilities, learning profiles, and nationalities. We believe that such inclusivity benefits our community and prepares our students to be culturally proficient, contributing members of the diverse and multi-faceted world they inhabit.

Guided by the Quaker principles of equality, mutual respect, and integrity, we recognize the innate worth and the "inner light" in everyone. The belief that we are all part of one human community influences all of our practices and reinforces our commitment to multicultural education. The faculty and staff  model and promote an appreciation for diversity in our academic curriculum, advisory program, speaker series, Learning Resource Center, and experiential learning programs.

Admissions and hiring committees at Tandem Friends School seek to attract and retain a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff. Financial assistance is available on a need basis to all in order to reduce socioeconomic barriers that might limit access to a Tandem Friends education.

Tandem Friends does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, or age in the administration of its educational policies, hiring policies, admissions policies, scholarship or loan programs, or athletic and other school-administered programs.
