Founded in 1887 as a coeducational experimental and developmental unit of Teachers College at Columbia University, Horace Mann is an independent college preparatory day school enrolling students in Nursery through Twelfth Grade. Our main campus, home to the Lower, Middle and Upper Divisions, is located on 18 acres in Riverdale.
The Nursery Division is located in Manhattan. In addition to
our primary academic facilities, Horace Mann also employs the use of
another campus in Washington, Connecticut. The John Dorr Nature Laboratory is the school's outdoor education and environmental education center.
Among the top independent day schools in the country, Horace Mann is best known for a superb academic program that draws talented young people from three states and as far away as 50 miles. The school welcomes an extremely diverse student population and values racial, ethnic, religious, sexual and socio-economic diversity.
First and foremost, Horace Mann is and always has been an institution that values the Life of the Mind. We encourage our students to take risks, try new things and challenge themselves.
